Investigating Disciplinary Literacy provides practical, research-based guidance for educators seeking to strengthen students’ reading, writing, and communication in subjects from the humanities to the sciences. The authors present a framework for conducting professional development cycles based on disciplinary literacy-related learning and research projects they have conducted with a range of districts over the past five years. The book shows how educators can collaboratively explore and implement well-grounded practices in context-specific, meaningful ways.

Join us for a four-part, virtual book discussion series where we explore how the ideas within Investigating Disciplinary Literacy, along with the newly released Essential Schoolwide Practices in Disciplinary Literacy: Grades 6 to 12, can help you transform the conversation around literacy at your middle school. Led by Jenelle Williams, co-chair of Michigan’s Disciplinary Literacy Task Force, book discussions will include connections to Michigan’s Continuous Improvement Process and resources curated by the Task Force.

Facilitator: Jenelle Williams is a Literacy Consultant within the Leadership and School Improvement unit at Oakland Schools, an intermediate school district supporting the 28 districts in Oakland County, Michigan. She joined the organization in 2017 following 18 years of experience in public schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She has served as a classroom teacher, IB Middle Years Programme Coordinator, teacher leader, and educational technology coach. An IB Educator and Examiner since 2013, Jenelle leads professional development workshops and marks e-assessments for the International Baccalaureate Organization. She holds an Education Specialist in Leadership degree and a Master’s degree in Reading and Language Arts through Oakland University. Jenelle is passionate about supporting teachers, building leaders, and central office administrators in the area of secondary literacy, and she is especially excited to be able to support Michigan’s work around disciplinary literacy through her role as Co-Chair of the statewide Disciplinary Literacy Task Force.
